DIY Cream of Something Soup Mix

Cream of Something Soup Mix

If you cook like my family, you are ALWAYS looking for those condensed “cream of …” soups in the pantry. Cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, etc etc. Well, now we have a recipe for you which makes the “cream of” part a snap to keep on hand and then you can add whatever ingredient you need to make the cream of ? part.

DIY Cream of Something Soup Mix

DIY Cream of Something Soup Mix

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Powdered Milk (powdered coffee creamer works too!)
  • 3/4 cup Cornstarch
  • 2 Tablespoons Chicken Bouillon Powder (or crush 4 cubes)
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon Parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon Basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper

Directions:

  • Measure ingredients and place directly into container that you are going to store the mix and shake well to combine.
  • Store in a cool dark place, in an airtight container for up to 3 months, or in freezer for up to a year.

How to use:
To use the mix, equal parts of soup mix and water. If preparing in a saucepan, heat over medium heat, whisking constantly, bring to a boil and cook for 2 minutes. To use as a thickening agent, mix 1/3 mix with 1/4 water and add to recipe

Add one item to mixture and you have a name for the “something” in your soup mix!

Cream of:

Broccoli: Add 1/2 cup steamed broccoli
Celery: Add 2 stalks thinly sliced celery
Cheddar: Add 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese.
Chicken:  Replace water with chicken broth
Mushroom: Add 1/2 cup thinly sliced mushrooms (or one small can)

What type of cream of something soup do you like? Let us know below and if we make it, we will share it with everyone!

Mix 1/ 2 cup of Cream of Something Soup mix with 1 cup water pour it over the top.
Top this with shredded cheese or American cheese slices

I never thought you could make your own “cream of” soup mix. I hate the canned ones because they always have hydrogenated fat in them. Some bouillon cubes don’t, so I want to try this!

Onion powder would work.. or saute onions and diced potatoes in a little butter/oil before adding to the soup

This is really cool. I want to make a whole bunch and freeze them. I like to make gift baskets and I think this would be a really neat item to add.

This is great to know! I’m always looking for ways to make things myself instead of buying them in a box or can.

This is such a good idea! You can make your own cream of whatever and you know exactly what is in it. I like the idea of doing this thanks for the recipe. I am pinning it to use next time I need this recipe!

The coffee creamer option sounds great because powdered milk is not in my pantry. I like cream of mushroom soup.
