Dr. Kay’s Night Splint {Review}
If you can pronounce Plantar Fasciitis or Achilles Tendinopathy then you know exactly how this brace works! I suffer from Plantar Fasciitis and let me tell you that it is not any fun.
If you are in pain when you first stand up and take oh, five or six steps…. you may be suffering from one of these conditions. Both happen when the tendons tighten up when you are off your feet (like at night when sleeping). The pain comes from little tears in the tendon as it is being over stretched with your first few steps – or that is the best non medical way for me to describe it.
The purpose of the splint is to keep your foot in a flexed position while sleeping so that the tendons don’t draw up again. I found out that I had this condition when I complained of pain upon waking and nightly cramps in my feet. I was given a monstrous boot to wear when sleeping. So when I was asked to test and try this splint, I was all over it.
Product Description:
Tired of starting your day with painful heels and arches? Plantar fascia and Achilles tendons that tighten up during the night are the cause, and the Dr. Kay’s Night Splint Brace is the solution. By holding your foot in a flexed position, it keeps the tissues stretched and makes those first steps out of bed so much more comfortable.
Adjustable Straps Let You Set the Degree of Flex
Two side straps with Velcro closure control the angle of your foot (dorsiflexion). Start with a gentle angle, then gradually increase it over the following nights as your tendons get accustomed to being stretched. The straps that wrap around your leg and foot are also adjustable so you can fine-tune the fit, and their center-release buckles make getting the Dr. Kay’s on and off a breeze.
Lightweight, Padded and Breathable for Pure Comfort
Designed to improve on heavy, bulky models that are hard to sleep in, the Dr. Kay’s has a tough, yet thin and lightweight molded plastic shell on the outside and luxuriously thick foam padding on the inside. A breathable liner helps prevent heat and moisture build-up. Even the straps are padded to keep you perfectly comfortable.
Non-Skid Sole
Thanks to a rubberized bottom tread, you can rest assured of a secure footing if you need to get up during the night. (However, the Dr. Kay’s is not recommended for daytime walking.) When you wake up in the morning, your relaxed tendons won’t scream with pain, your tissues won’t react with further damaging inflammation … and you’ll be well on your way to healing your painful foot condition.
Ok, that is a bunch of information about a really simple splint. Basically..when you are not wearing shoes and are not standing… your tendons are not under stress and will draw up trying to relax and recover from holding you up all day. Now, the problem occurs when you get up and quickly stand on your feet. This sudden pressure stretches the tendons too much too fast, causing pain and suffering for you.
While there isn’t a bunch that can be done about this condition, there are a couple of things that can help you cope with it such as stretching before getting out of bed, wearing good supporting shoes at all times and of course a splint like this will provide relief.
