Girl at the End of the World {Review}
Book Description:
Girl at the End of the World is a memoir about Elizabeth Esther–a girl who grows up in a church that deteriorates into a cult. She suffers physical, emotional, and spiritual abuse before she eventually escapes. BUT this book is not just about the damage of a cult. It’s about the freedom and hope that Elizabeth finds when she embraces God’s love. Girl at the End of the World is ultimately a book about one person’s genuine pursuit of truth and love.
This book is not just for cult survivors. It’s a book for Christians who want to be able to spot what unhealthy leadership and spiritual abuse looks like. It’s for any person who wants to know that God’s love can triumph over manipulation and fear. It’s for anyone who wants to grasp that cult-like mentalities are human problems, not just religious problems, and they can be found in many places outside of faith communities.
My Thoughts:
This is a great story from the author about her life in The Assembly, her escape, and what happened once she was out. I found myself cringing, laughing, and crying as she tells about events in her past. I read this book, all 213 pages, in less than 24 hours. I found it a great insight into that kind of life, where your religion isn’t just Sunday and Wednesday services; this group dressed, ate, worked, even married according to their faith (and more importantly, their leaders). I could “see” how someone could find themselves trapped, because they don’t know any other way. I would recommend this book to my friends, Christian or otherwise, especially the ladies. It would also be great for a book club and it even comes with discussion questions at the end!
