I love to use files and envelopes, always thinking they are going to keep me organized. Truth is, however, that files and envelopes don’t help if you can’t keep them together and they aren’t clearly marked. I have lots of learning to do!

I have a basket on my desk where all mail goes, so that helps me sort the bills from the junk. The junk mail gets put into recycling immediately so it doesn’t pile up.

This could be filed away (pun slightly intended) as more of a tip: I make photocopies of the most important documents, and write “my copy” on the pages using a yellow highlighter.

We have a small wooden “office/desk-supplies” organizer thing near the front door. It’s nothing fancy, just something that I picked up at Goodwill. But we keep in it a notepad, Post-Its, pens/pencils, and highlighters. Also, this is our little “relay station” where we leave notes to other family members, e.g. where we’re going if we’ve left the house. …Not really related to paperwork per se, but it’s a way of keeping our little notes organized.

I have a ridiculous amount of important papers/paperwork from my years as a graduate student. Most of the documents are kept in huge binders and expanding file folders, and all of my professional posters (for presentations and so on) are kept in pricey plastic tubes.
