Homemade Instant Oatmeal Packets
Have you priced the instant oatmeal lately? Geesh..going up every time we buy it. So, while making it one morning I got to looking at what is in it and decided to give it a shot. Not bad and the best part is that it can be made for less than a dime a serving!
Ingredients:
- 10 cups of quick oats
- 2 cups of brown sugar (we usually make it with Splenda Brown)
- 1 cup of non dairy coffee creamer
Instructions:
There are two ways to make this… Simple and Just too easy!
1. Just too easy:
Combine all ingredients together, mix well. Store in airtight container or place 1/2 cup of mix into a baggie and label with cooking directions.
2. Simple:
Place half the oats in a large bowl with the sugar and creamer. Put other half in a large baggie and crush with the back of a spoon. (You can also pull out the food processor but the kids like beating the baggie – joys of being a mom). Once the oats are crushed, mix together with other ingredients. Store in airtight container or place 1/2 cup of mix into a baggie and label with cooking directions.
When ready to eat: Mix 1/2 cup of oatmeal mix with 3/4 cup of hot water.
You can add anything you like to this mixture. I like to toss in a few raisins or dried cherries.
What do you like in your oatmeal?

This is great for people who want to save money and stretch their oatmeal! I use the Old Fashioned Oatmeal now after going Vegan though.
Thank You!

I’ve stopped eating flavored instant oatmeal packets a long time ago because of the high sugar content. I just eat the old-fashioned version and love to put fresh fruits like strawberry in it.

you cannot beat less than $.10 a serving

I eat a lot of oatmeal, mostly in the cooler months. This is a good idea. I like blueberries in my oatmeal.

What a great idea, except I’d use whole rolled oats. And my oatmeal MUST have raisins!

Any ideas or measurements to make the flavored packets like apple cinnamon or strawberries and cream? elaineb1@ymail.com
Sherryl says
Here are a couple of suggestions:
Just add to the basic packets
Apples w/Cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1-2 tablespoons dried apples, chopped
Raisins w/Cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1-2 tablespoons raisins
Cinnamon Spice
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg or other favorite ground spice
Other Flavors: Dried fruit of choice – about 1- 2 tablespoons of your favorite dried chopped fruit
You can also use powdered milk (1 tablespoon) for a creamer flavor.
Hope that gives you a couple of ideas.

Great idea. I think I’d add some cinnamon and brown sugar.

This is a great idea, especially for kids but it’s also just as easy to put 1/2 cup of old fashioned oats 1 cup of water in the microwave for 3 minutes. Even better we put it in coconut milk instead of water so that you need no sugar.

Oddly, I never thought about using coffee creamer in my oatmeal, though now that I think about it, when you pour the Quaker instant oatmeal packets, there is some powder, which I kind of just thought was some kind of flavorer. Thanks for the recipe and measurements!
