November BlogHer Writing Challenge Day 2
Tuesday, November 4 ~ Writing Prompt: What is your favorite holiday memory?
My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. It used to be the combined week of Christmas to New Year’s Eve but years ago that changed when we lost my grandmother Mae right after Christmas and put her to rest on New Year’s Eve. Being that she was the one constant in my life until then; I still struggle during that week of the year.
So I put my energy into Thanksgiving weekend. Thursday to Sunday is my Thanksgiving holiday! This is the longest time slot that my hubster is home (except for taking a vacation). We get together with family and friends. The girls shop til they drop and I attempt to get everyone to drag the holiday decorations up from the basement and put into place. Our home transforms from a “fall theme” to a “Holiday theme” over this four day period. Well, usually… Last year we didn’t hold our family dinner until Saturday and no one wanted to “transform” the decorations because of a ball game… really??? A ball game??
Fast forward to five days before Christmas and one of my friends stopped by and decorated my front porch as a surprise! We had not even put up our tree yet! The two remaining slaves..I mean teens living at home decided they would put up ONE tree and ONE tree only. AND the ONE tree only had ONE tub of decorations on it. Hmmpf.. to say I had a bad case of bah humbug would be an understatement.
This year we are already working out the details for our Thanksgiving weekend. I am hoping that the our son and his family that live out of town will come home to visit. So far we have the menu completed.. that’s it other than a couple of shopping trips for late Thursday night into Friday morning..but I am sure the entire weekend will be filled with love and laughter; making it once again my favorite holiday of the year.
