Old Fashioned {Review}
Love can be complicated in today’s busy, modern world. I thought it was tough in my day, but it seems our kids have it even harder. Why? The concept of “love” being shown in movies, on TV, or even in front of them can be so many different ideas! That’s why I’ve enjoyed watching the Old Fashioned movie, as well as reading its novel and the companion guide.
Turning his back on his reckless lifestyle, former frat boy Clay Walsh has settled down to run an antique shop in a small Midwestern college town . . . and to pursue lofty and outdated theories on love and romance. But when Amber Hewson, a free-spirited woman with a restless soul, rents the apartment above his shop, Clay can’t help being attracted to her spontaneous and passionate embrace of life. Amber also finds herself surprisingly drawn to Clay, but his ideas about relationships are unusual to say the least, and they bring to light her own deep wounds and fears about love.
This is the novelization of the movie I’ve previously reviewed in Old Fashioned {DVD Review}. I thought this followed the movie pretty well and it was neat to read more of the emotions and inner thoughts of the characters that you miss out on with a movie. Yet again, I got to follow along with the story of Clay and Amber, who seem to belong anywhere but with each other, and yet…well, I won’t spoil it for you!
Contrary to popular opinion, being “old fashioned” doesn’t mean you’re dull or unromantic. In fact, a true old-fashioned relationship can be more exciting and romantic than anything you’ve ever experienced! So what does it mean to do things The Old Fashioned Way? Sure, it means opening doors, holding out chairs and taking things slow. But a true old-fashioned romance goes much deeper than that. Inspired by the motion picture OLD FASHIONED, this book shows how to reclaim the lost art of romance by introducing romantic love as God intended it—for all of us. Regardless of past experiences, where you’ve been, or where you are now, you can find and create a love that will last a lifetime.
The Old Fashioned Way is a 40 day study to go along with the book and movie mentioned above. It helps readers reflect on the “lost art of romance” based on Scripture as well as quotes from the movie to study. I also liked the specific prayers to help open our hearts and minds while the readers covered certain topics. There are also spots to journal/note taking through the book.
I think both the book, the companion guide as well as the movie would be great for a Christian singles class, or even as a “refresher” for married couples. It’s real easy to forget about romance once you’ve been married for a while. It’s also a good opportunity to help those who are dating stay in the right mind set as they search for their future spouse in this wild world.
