Review: A Parent’s Playbook for Learning

June 14, 2013 SimplySherryl 2 Comments

parents-playbook

They say children don't come with an instruction manual…but… this book is right on point in learning how your children process things.

This book will explain in simple steps:

  • How to create a learning environment that allows each of your kids to excel and develop confidence in their unique abilities.
  • How to support and encourage your kids' educations in ways that are best for them.
  • How to teach each of your kids the most effective learning strategies for them, as well as how and when to use them.

About the Book

This is a detailed, practical guide to help parents (and teachers) understand how different personality types learn best, and includes a personality quiz. The techniques parents learn in this book series will teach them specific, research-backed, actionable strategies amassed from nearly 100 reference texts with respect to how to create a learning environment that allows their kids to excel and develop confidence in their abilities, how to support and encourage their kids' education in ways that are best for him or her, and how to teach kids the strategies that help them each play to their individual learning strengths. The book reveals how each of the eight personality types naturally gets organized, gets motivated, approaches new concepts, Learns in groups, takes notes and files knowledge, tackles homework and test prep, and handles success and failure.

About the Author

Jen Lilienstein is the author of the award-winning Playbooks for Learning book series and founder of Kidzmet.com, a website dedicated to helping parents and teachers understand how kids learn best. At home, she practices what she preaches in her Playbooks for Learning with her daughter (an extraverted intuitive) and son (an introverted sensor) who are as different as yin and yang.

My Experience

While it's true that everyone learns at their own pace, I was amazed at the wide span in learning types. This book was an eye opening process for me. I could easily tell where my children's personalities fit in the scale and how to tweak each one's lessons to help them the most. I even investigated my own personality type!

I am looking forward to applying the techniques to be able to “translate” my learning style into the styles of the girls. Neither of them learn the way I do…and I understand the challenge a little more now. Understanding the how and why makes a huge difference in the way I will be teaching.

That’s interesting, I might look it up when I feel I need some little help… you don’t see books that are key in on the child’s needs and more for the parents ‘needs’.
