She Calls Me Daddy {Review}
We all know it’s important for parents to have an active role in their son or daughter’s life, right? And each relationship is special, for sure…but the Daddy/daughter relationship can have such a great impact on her life, that I think every Dad with a little girl should read She Calls Me Daddy by Dr. Robert Wolgemuth.
Babies come in two kinds, boys and girls. But many dads get a bit more nervous when told they are going home with a cute little bundle of joy . . . covered in pink! Robert Wolgemuth puts anxieties to rest, encouraging new fathers of the wonderful times waiting ahead, while providing practical guidance and encouragement for every father who is walking the journey of growing a confident, God-honoring woman who (still) calls him daddy.
This book, which has sold over 300,000 copies, has now been updated by the author (over 40% of the book is new material) and includes a foreword by Greg and Gary Smalley. Building on seven critical foundational elements (protect your daughter, teach the art of conversation, express affection, discipline appropriately, create laughter, instill faith in God, and demonstrate proper conduct) Wolgemuth suggests ways to actually get to know your “little” girl and foster a deep and ongoing connection at every age.
The old saying is that women marry men just like their fathers, and in my experience, this tends to be true. So what better way for your daughter to find her soul mate than by teaching her by example? When a father is a strong Christian man, who cherishes his daughter and with her mother, demonstrates a healthy marriage, she grows up knowing exactly what she needs in a husband and father of her future children.
This book by Dr. Wolgemuth is written from a guy’s perspective, and each chapter is filled with stories, advice, and check lists to help you “get through” whatever the particular topic is about. I read this book, though I’m not a Daddy, and I loved that I could see my father in this book. I personally also enjoyed the Scripture as it applied to his advice and the situation he was explaining.
He approaches building and nurturing the Daddy/daughter relationship like a man would look at a project. There is planning, steps to take, times to correct and rebuild, etc. He even includes discussion questions at the end of the book, either for solo exploration or if you were going to read this book in a small group.
I would recommend this book to any Dads with daughters, no matter what age they are. It’s never too late to make your relationship better with your child.
