Essential Oils in the Man Cave
Does the man in your life have his own room? We call ours the “Man Cave” which is essentially a room just for him, his TV, computer, etc. It’s a place to hang out and relax, alone or with the guys, that I have little control over. But it has developed an odor lately (food, socks and guys in general) and it’s getting worse. So I decided it was time to start using essential oils in the Man Cave!
I knew going into this project that I couldn’t use any female scents as my husband would object. So no lavender, rose, ginger and scents like that (although I love them personally)! But that still leaves the question, how do I remove the stink that never leaves the Man Cave?
I found the solution with a company called Soulful Essence. Knowing that I was tackling the Man Cave, I chose their blend called “Get the Funk Out“:
Eucalyptus & lemongrass botanical essences combine to create an odor bashing double powerhouse. Excellent in diaper & garbage bins and works wonders on cooking, pet & bathroom odors. This blend will even Get the Funk Out of gym shoes and other sports equipment. The eucalyptus and lemongrass also work together to refresh emotions, combat agitation and soothe exhaustion.
Here’s how I tackled the problem.
1. First, I didn’t want to upset the husband by invading his personal space. I wouldn’t like him sorting my craft room so…I promised that I wouldn’t pull any of his toys out, just a good cleaning and refresh of the Man Cave. He was satisfied with this agreement.
2. Second, I started by clearing out any and all trash, laundry and any dirty dishes. He’s not a slob so there wasn’t much, but even old garbage can start to smell quick! My kids washed the garbage can and sprayed some of the Get the Funk Out room deodorizer and let it dry.
3. Now it was time for a good, thorough cleaning. I mean dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, you name it! I added a few drops of the Get the Funk Out to my vinegar based general cleanser and every surface that would stand still got wiped down.
4. For the last step, now that everything was clean and back to my standard of clean, I wanted to find a way to keep it at least smelling fresh. Again, not wanting to have my husband complain about girly smelling oils, I stuck with the Get the Funk Out blend by Soulful Essence and added a reed diffuser. This is a great way to keep the room smelling good without having to remember to blow out a candle, add more oil or turn off an electric diffuser.
As a “just because” gift, I left him a bottle of the Beard Oil & Shave Oil on his sink in the bathroom. The Beard Oil has cedarwood and bergamot oils in a jojoba oil base that you rub/comb through the beard to leave it soft after a shower. The Shave Oil has hints of juniper and frankincense (manly, right?!) and you simply apply to wet skin and shave. No need to rinse either!
So what did my husband say when he came home to inspect his Man Cave?
“Hmm. I like it.”
I just had to laugh and shake my head. But he did confirm the next day that he really liked the smell in his Man Cave; that it wasn’t overpowering or female, but manly with the eucalyptus and clean smelling lemongrass. I had succeeded and found a way to use essential oils in the Man Cave!

Right now my house seems like it is nothing but a man cave with all guys. I use Febreeze mostly but as of recently I am trying a natural product. So far so good.

I would most like to try the Get the Funk Out Home Deodorizer. It looks like it would do the trick in the man cave.

I usually deal with the awful man cave smells by keeping the door shut and staying out. Otherwise, I try to sneak in some air freshers. I just have to make sure that they’re “manly” scents….like musk or bacon.

The odors coming out of the Man Cave are awful. It is usually because they leave their dirty socks and shoes laying around. It is not unusual to find smelly t-shirts left after a game of horse. I always wonder what they wear home. Simply putting the dirty laundry where it belongs makes a big difference. If I smell a lingering scent I have been known to spray Lysol. Essential oils would be so much better.
