How to Hack your New Keurig!

How to Hack your New Keurig!

How to Hack your New Keurig
So if you've been blessed to get the new Keurig 2.0 model, you probably were just as surprised as I was that your existing K-cups don't work in the new model! I was stunned and thought mine was defective at first. But no, that is how it was designed. But no fear, I found out how to hack your new Keurig with this simple cheat!

We discovered this hack when my husband got frustrated at the store, since the boxes of K-cups aren't clearly marked if they will work in the new machines AND you can't buy any other brand but Keurig's own. While we love their products, they can get pricey when you have two coffee lovers in the house!

How to hack your new Keurig

Here are the steps:

You'll need:

  • Used K-cups that are designed for the 2.0
  • Box cutter
  • Tape

Directions:

1. Using your box cutter, CAREFULLY run the tip of the blade around the very edge of the lid. This should be done on the “inside” of the cup and not around the plastic ring or they won't fit right.

2. Continue to make small slices around the foil lid until you've gone all the way around and can gently lift the lid from the cup.

3. Place a small piece of tape on the lid and tape onto your “old” K-cups (even the refillable baskets work). Place the taped section at the 10 o'clock position so the reader inside the machine picks up on the sensor.

4. Brew as normal.

That's it! This simple hack will let you use the previous versions of the K-cups, even the off brands and refillable baskets. By buying one box of the 2.0 cups, you can then use the lids from them on the cheaper cups in your new Keurig 2.0.

Here are a few tips, now that I've been doing this trick for a few months:

  • The edges don't have to be perfect, but you want as much as the outer white ring on the lid as possible.
  • The sensor reader is at the 10 o'clock position inside the brewer, so I try to line up the taped part accordingly.
  • If it doesn't work the first time, open the lid, adjust slightly and try again.
  • I usually get about 10 brews per lid, depending on how gentle you close the lid and handle the cup after brewing.

Well that stinks that the new keurigs don’t take the standard k-cups, that you have to buy special ones. I think that may keep people from upgrading. Glad you found a way around it. Take that!
