Being the mom of a large family has unique challenges. Being the mom of seven children, five of them girls, takes challenges to a new level. One of the usual questions people ask a mom of a large family: Are girls or boys easier to raise? My answer is a resounding….
It depends. I know..really a helpful and insightful answer right?
Hear me out and my answer will become clear. Based on my experiences, boys are more challenging..UNTIL those dreaded but much needed hormones of young girls turning into women kick in. And then my friend, all bets are off!
When the children were younger, they were guided with the same set of rules for the most part. Our house rule was “There are very few reasons for failure, most are just excuses”.
The boys tended to be louder, rougher, and bucked authority of the parents sooner than the girls. We instructed both genders in the same life skill sets and required the same academically, meaning earning a college degree was not negotiable. Both genders were taught that it is important to have the knowledge even if you chose to not use it. Like having a skill that could support your family is important whether you are the head of the family or the stay at home mom. Life happens. Life isn't always fair, and you need to be able to either step up to help when needed or take over the responsibility if put in that situation.
As our boys grew into young men, they both embraced adulthood with a vengeance. They both chose a military path, although different branches, serving their country bravely. Both are now married with children of their own. Life skills learned while growing up, such as cooking and cleaning have been a real blessing to their respective wives and families.
The girls tended to be quieter, not as rough, and generally easier to raise. Until the womanly transformation monster invaded our home. Oh my..these girls of ours were not in the lucky gene pool when it came to their “monthly visitor” being nice. Oh no, when it came to visit it was like the world had been tilted on its axis. Headaches, cramps, tears, drama level emotional outbursts…did I mention tears?
Yeah, as each one of our girls became young women, the chances were that someone in the house was having their monthly visitor and there just didn't seem to be a time that someone wasn't down for the week. This was confusing for me because I was one of the lucky few in the world that have very light cycles and they only last for a couple of days. Our girls however, were not so lucky with extremely heavy cycles lasting at least a week.
Since taking a week off of school or work isn't an option, finding ways to manage life while the monthly womanly transformation monster (so nicknamed by the boys) became a challenge.
Our answer was our “Magic Bag”, again named by the boys in the house because the bag contained things that worked “miracles” with their sisters. And it was easier to get one of the boys to go fetch said magic bag instead of asking them to go get a tampon or pad from under the sink. I will say that my guys do have an awesome way of managing stressed girls.
The Wilson Magic Bag held the “magic” that made the girls tolerable while the monthly womanly transformation monster was in residence. This magic included tampons (in all absorbency levels), menstrual pads (again in all shapes, sizes and absorbency), feminine wipes for easy clean up, chocolate (for emotional comfort), and a bottle of pain reliever for the physical discomforts.

That you can grab at the check out line but don't miss it as it is an integral item to a complete magic bag.

Advil works great. I never had a name for our bag, that’s a good name so the boys are no so embarrassed having to get it. Anything to help the girls transition into this part of like is good, and this helps alot.
My coping mechanism would be Advil.

It sounds like your kids turned out very well. I know you are very proud. It’s because you were such a great parent. I hated the dreaded “monthly visitor”. I called it the “curse”. It was horrible for me, too. Come to find out years later I had endometriosis. I thought I was in more pain than my friends and was so glad I got checked out. I went through many boxes of Midol in my time.
I bet your boys grew into much more understanding men than if they hadn’t had their sisters that needed the Magic Bag. I still need the magic bag yet I didn’t know that Advil made s product that didn’t have the caffeine. So glad I read this. Thanks for a great informative post even for oldies like me.
The Magic Bag is such a smart idea! I will definitely use that when our daughter is older. We had a code word if I needed my mom to pick supplies up at the store- I would ask her to bring strawberries home. Advil really works! It’s always helped my aches and pains.
I could use a magic bag for my 3 male grandsons who are only 14, 9, and 5. Of course, it would take a lot of magic to do any good with them-lol. Maybe I can make a Goody bag and give it to whoever is the best behaved.

Are boys or girls easier? That’s a loaded question, isn’t it? I have 8 boys and 6 girls and people are often astounded that our boys were (are) also teary and emotional during those tween and early teen years! I actually have an Aunt Flo box that I keep stocked with: chocolate, Advil, colored pencils and coloring books and yummy snacks.
Chocolate is a required item!! Agree with that!
