How to Clean Your Garbage Disposer

Have you ever had a smell that you couldn't quite figure out where it was coming from or what it was in your kitchen? I finally stuck my face into the sink and took a nice long (choke, gag and wretch) smell of my garbage disposer.

Oh my..it was horrid! I tried ice cubes, lemons both whole and sliced, frozen coffee grinds and even vinegar all without success. Google search failed me completely!

While at the store, this item was posted on the end cap for all to see….

Why not try it?  Disposer Care claims that it will remove the smell by removing the build up of grease, grime and food…ugh and yuck!

Once home we cleaned out the sink and read the package directions. We ran the water on screaming hot for a couple of minutes before placing (read as shoving) the entire package into the disposer. Making sure that fingers were not within the unit (really???) the water was reduced to a trickle and the disposer was turned on.

STAND BACK – yells one of the teenagers as blue bubbling foam starting backing up BOTH sides of the sink! Note to self: Thank hubby for buying deep sinks.

I will admit the smell while foaming and churning was not pleasant but it was pretty neat to watch. Eventually (3 to 4 minutes) the blue foam retreated into the drain and there was a swooshing sound (we had been instructed to listen for it on the package) indicating the drain and disposer were clean and free from debris. YAY!!

The water was then cranked back up to SCREAMING HOT and allowed to run until all the residue was washed from the sink and the disposer was then turned off.

Yes – of course I stuck my face back into the disposer and took a whiff… OH MAN.. what a difference! My disposer smells like bleach and lemons – definitely a scent I can live with in and around the kitchen. Gone was that “WHAT DIED” smell.

And the bonus to having tried this product?  My shiny sinks! They are both beautiful!

So if you have a stink in your kitchen that you can't find…..check that nasty garbage disposer! According to the package, we should use this cleanser once a month to keep things flowing freely and smelling good!
