5 Ways to Reduce Stress
At my last physical, my doctor asked me a question. He wanted to know if my lifestyle was stressful? Hello? Whose life isn’t stressful? So after I stopped laughing, I answered him…
Why would my lifestyle be any more stressful than anyone else? I have five married children and two high school girls that are both graduating this year. Add the eleven grandchildren, my job, my personal business activities, etc, etc, etc… I still don’t feel my life is overly stressful. Busy? Oh yeah! Stressful? Not usually.
He then asked if I ever feel tired. WOW.. that did strike a chord with me. My BIGGEST complaint to any of my doctors is that I am always tired. After a few more minutes of conversation about my normal routine, how I handle hiccups in schedules, and all the other issues that come up in running your own business..we agreed that perhaps our definition of stress was a little different. He stood firm by his position of my being tired all the time as a result of stress, while I think it is just because I am always on the go.
Semantics aside, we both agreed that I needed to start making a few changes that would allow my body to rest and recover from all the demands (stress/activity) I encounter daily.
So here are the 5 things that I am doing to help myself feel better and handle the demands of my busy/stressful lifestyle:
Increase Water Intake
If you are around me for any time at all you know that I live on coffee and tea. I drink it all day, every day. Well, I have started alternating them with a glass of water. I won’t give up my coffees or teas, but each time I finish a mug of one of them I fill my mug with water. Just this simple step has increased my water intake probably 300 percent! I know.. I know..
We all know our bodies need water to operate properly. This makes sense since all our organs require water to function. I read that the old 64 ounces was still a good goal but that it was based on a normal weight for an adult which is 128 pounds. Wait.. if we are supposed to drink half our weight in ounces I would have to drink…. A LOT OF WATER!!!!
Honestly, plain water isn’t my favorite but I am consuming more and have started to see small improvements in some of my operating systems.
Increase Physical Activity
This area almost seems a moot point since I think I am on the go all the time. However, driving around in my car (according to my physician) does NOT count! Shoot…
While I did join a gym, I have not found the time to become the gym rat that I probably need to be to see the changes my body needs but I have been getting up every hour and walking 10 laps on my porch. Doesn’t seem like much, but it does add up to several hundred steps each day.
My original goal was to add an additional 500 steps a day to my routine. Honestly, the laps each hour did that so I bumped the goal up another 500 steps. Now I have to think about ways to increase my steps to reach the new goal.
Of course my doctor wants me to get weight and cardio worked into my life on a daily basis..thus the gym membership. That is my task for this month. I am trying to get to the gym four times a week for at least an hour each visit. Wish me luck!
Increase Amount of Sleep & Rest
Another area that I have to admit that I am lacking in self control. I know my body needs to rest. My body certainly tries to tell me that I need to rest. However, my mind won’t stop long enough for me to enjoy the restfulness of a nap or solid night of sleep.
So now I am taking 15 minutes mid morning and 15 minutes mid afternoon to stop and relax. No phone, no television..just me with my feet elevated for 15 minutes twice a day.
At first it was just long enough for me to get sleepy and then I had to get up.. NOT COOL! But over the month, it has become something that I start watching the clock when the timer is about to buzz. While 15 minutes isn’t long enough for a nap, it is long enough to clear my mind and spend time both resting and in prayer over my daily scripture reading.
Increase Protein & Reduce Carbohydrates
This one is challenge because I love my salty crunchy snacks. However I do not like hearing my sugars are little too high. So, to take this challenge on I am working in more protein in the way of a morning smoothie (I do not like to eat in the morning) and I have started limiting my carbs as much as possible.
Supplement my Nutrients through Vitamins
This one has been the easiest for me since I started taking my Superior Source Vitamins. The best thing about them for me anyway, is that they a sub-lingual. This means they are not swallowed. Instead they are allowed to dissolve under your tongue. Absorption is an issue for me since I had bypass surgery almost 10 years ago. Superior Source Vitamins take this issue off the table because I don’t have to swallow and hope my body processes the vitamins before they work through my system.
Since vitamins such as B12 Energy Burst, Vitamin C “Tangy” Orange Melts, Vitamin D, CoQ10, Vitamin K and Melatonin are known for being something we all need everyday…adding them to my daily routine has been a no brainer!
Let me share my reasons for using and recommending Superior Source Vitamins.
