Get off the road. If your vehicle is able to move, drive it over to the shoulder. If you need to leave your vehicle and it isn’t safe to get out on your driver’s side for any reason, exit through the passenger door. If you leave, make sure to lock your vehicle

You never know when your car will break down, so even if you don’t want or like to wear a coat, keep one with you just in case something happens. Prolonged exposure to the cold weather can be very dangerous. Also keeping a blanket in the trunk can be helpful.

My dad drilled it into me from the day I started to learn to drive to have a “GO” bag in my car. Ex-military. So it has a change of clothes, an ID, a few dollars, a small tool set, bottled water, protein bars, first aid kit, large towel that doubles as a small blanket, small hygiene kit, lighter, etc. It seems silly to be so over prepared, but then I married a man in the foreign service and the first thing they gave me was a sheet with instructions on “GO” bags! LOL! I can honestly say that while I have never been in a massive emergency where I need the GO bag, I have actually used everything in the bag at one time or another. It seems like a lot, but it’s just one duffle bag that lives in the trunk.
