400 Moms by Jill West {Review}
With “everyone” talking about how unhealthy America is getting, do you ever wonder what the experts feed their own children? I know I do. The book, 400 Moms: Discover What 400 Nutrition Experts Feed Their Kids, by Jill West, R.D., answers that very question.
The foods you serve your kids can make a huge difference in their behavior, school success, sick days, health, fitness and even their self-esteem. This book opens the door to hundreds of practical tips, strategies and solutions for raising a healthy child. Over 400 Registered Dietitians, who are moms like you, have contributed their ideas about how they feed their kids. This book not only shares what they do, but also gives you insights into why it’s important. Moms report the lists in the book of “Best Picks” and “Worst Picks” for cereals, crackers, desserts, and other products is extremely helpful. By the time you finish the book, you will become a bit of a nutrition expert yourself. Whether your child is a toddler or teenager, this easy-to-read book can help shape the rest of their lives!
The author also wondered about what other nutrition experts fed their own families, while they dealt with teaching other parents how to feed their children, and she asked them! This book covers a variety of topics, such as breakfasts, snacks, healthy choices, going out to eat, etc.
The book was an easy read from the standpoint that it wasn’t in medical terms but easy to understand explanations. There are plenty of examples of what is a good or bad choice and why it’s that way. I found her explanation of food portion comparisons very easy to remember, such as a cup of fruit is 8 large strawberries or half a grapefruit. Or that a 1.5 oz serving of cheese is the size of 4 dice stacked as a square. This is great for visual parents, especially busy ones, who get frustrated trying to measure every thing that goes on a plate.
400 Moms by Jill West also contains several illustrations and graphs to go along with the topics. She also provides real world examples such as comparing fruit snack ingredients, meals to order at popular restaurants, and suggestions to help your whole family transition to a healthier way of eating.
I would definitely suggest this book to any parent or caregiver to read and start making changes for the better.

I enjoyed the book 400 Moms by Jill West.
I think she gave great tips for real life; instead of saying don’t go out to eat, she said to make better choices when you eat out.
Or instead of packing pre-packaged lunches for your kids, take a little time and make your own using better ingredients or fruits.
400 Moms gave us a lot of great ideas! Definitely worth picking up and it was an easy read, considering the subject matter.
I need to check this book out! I have totally noticed when we eat ‘junk’ that my kids act totally different. It’s hard sometimes because I’m always so busy and in a rush, but I know what I feed them is SOO important to other aspects in life. Thanks for sharing!
