All Mascara Is Not Created Equal {Book Review}
I love to read, and as a mom of two teenage girls, it can be hard to find something that we’d all enjoy! But I instantly fell in love with Jessica Landmon’s All Mascara Is Not Created Equal. It’s full of funny tips that also relate back to Scripture to help mom and daughters get through this enjoyable but challenging period of life!
The world is marketing lifestyles that contradict the way that God has called us to live. Lying, selfishness, and justification of all types of sin are just a few lessons our youth are being sold. In All Mascara Is Not Created Equal, Jessica Landmon attempts to reach the hearts of young women, providing spiritual, practical, and humorous tips in short, “tweet-like” form to help them live the life that God would approve of.
It can be hard growing up today, with all the social pressures that our kids face. And I believe there are special expectations on our daughters as they go through their teenage years and develop into young women. They are told they have to look a certain way or dress in a certain style, etc all to be beautiful and socially accepted. This also extends to their behavior around boys who are dealing with their own pressure and society expectations as well!
This book is an easy read, filled with humor and practical points that we can talk about with our daughters. I personally enjoy the Twitter type points that are great as conversation starters or even reminders to share during the day.
I have to say that it’s not just for young women, but even women my age or my grown and married daughters; the advice can apply to any woman since we all come across justifying bad behavior, lying to ourselves and others, and staying true to ourselves and our faith!
What do you hope readers take away from All Mascara is Not Created Equal?
I hope women learn that pop culture shouldn’t define the kind of women we become. I hope that they see that life is hard, but Jesus will be your comforter and strength. I hope that every woman sees her beauty, even before she puts on her mascara. Our inner beauty is so much more important than anything on the outside.
Can you tell us more about the ministry behind the book, Women Get Real?
Women Get Real Ministries is all about “getting real” with other women. All too often, women put on the façade that everything is just perfect. But, in reality, they are silently suffering with issues like fear, anxiety, depression, body image, and faith. We break the rules about what is and is not acceptable to talk about, to try and reach the hearts of women providing them with hope and healing.
I’d definitely recommend this book for moms of pre-teen or teenage daughters, plus any other women’s groups or book clubs. This may be a great way to get to know other moms in your position since it’s not overly sensitive and has plenty of laughs to keep it on the lighter side of these topics.
