Amazed and Confused {Review}
Recently, I was given a wonderful opportunity to review several books by inScribed, “A collection of studies by women”, before they went on sale to the public. One of them is called Amazed and Confused: When God’s Actions Collide with Our Expectations by author Heather Zempel. This book is a study of the book of Habakkuk, a minor Prophet. He asks for God’s help and instead of getting the answer he had hoped for, is instead confused and lost by the Lord’s reply:
5 “Look among the nations, and see;
wonder and be astounded.
For I am doing a work in your days
that you would not believe if told.”
This is a wonderful book and study guide of the book of Habakkuk and how it relates to our lives every day. Don’t we all seem to ask for things in prayer, from the little things like a change in the weather to healing a dying relative? And haven’t we all received an answer (or a perceived lack of one) only to wonder why our loving God would “allow” the outcome? This is the perfect study book for women who have these questions.
It’s written in an easy to understand way, great for an individual study or a small group setting. I definitely recommend having your Bible handy before you open the first page and bookmark Habakkuk for easier reference!
Here is a summary from the inScribed group about this book:
Most people have prayed for something or someone in earnest, seeking God’s will, only to be left confused by God’s response. Sometimes we ask, “Why would a good God allow bad things to happen to good people?” In Amazed and Confused, Heather Zempel tackles this question head-on by exploring the book of Habakkuk.
When the prophet Habakkuk prayed that God would bring change to the backsliding nation of Israel, this issue came to the forefront. Habakkuk begged God for revival and that He would turn the hearts of faithless people back to Him.
God’s answer to Habakkuk was, “Take a look at the nations and watch what happens! You will be shocked and amazed” (1:5, The Voice). The vision God gave Habakkuk was one of warfare and exile. How do you respond when God answers your prayers in a way that seems out of line with his character and promises?
Amazed and Confused proceeds systematically through the book of Habakkuk, exploring the prophet’s prayer, God’s response, and the prophet’s journey from confusion to worship. This interactive Bible study is the perfect choice for those who are hurting and confused about God’s responses to their prayers.
