A Book Review: Are You Playing By House Rules?

I just finished reading the most powerful make you stop and rethink your life book by Darren and Cara Grant titled, Are You Playing By House Rules? Let me say that I could NOT put this book down! Looking at the cover, I was not prepared for the story line or the challenges that had me hitting my knees in prayer and thanksgiving for my family and friends.

Joe is a new Christian and is separated from his wife, who was having a hard time understanding his complete change in life based on his newly found faith. When tragedy strikes, Joe’s whole world crashes in on him.  As the story-line plays out, Joe is helped by a stranger (Robert) who not only comforts him, he helps to educate and encourage Joe in his faith.

There are several story-lines running throughout the book, with the underlying need for faith and support of those around us. It reminded me to listen to that gentle urging and not just ignore the opportunities to stand up for myself and others in need. We need to understand why we believe what we believe in order to be a help to others. Tragedy will strike us all. Troubles will come along. It isn’t a matter of if we are caught up but when 0 and how we deal with it.

I read this book over the course of a couple of days. At times I cried and other times I smiled at the truth of God’s Word. The authors really brought all the characters to life. I felt personally involved in the story.  Each character seemed to be just like someone in my life. I always find it amazing that people are placed in our lives just when we need them.

This book does make you stop and think about things that have become so common in our world. Just because it is commonly accepted – does that make it right? I found my faith challenged and strengthened through this book. It didn’t matter if I didn’t agree with everything presented. What mattered was that the questions sent me back to the Word, where I spent time digging deeper into the scriptures and then to prayer to gain more understanding and a deeper knowledge.

This book would make a great ladies book study as it could be a springboard for so many conversations and studies of faith.
