In Arms Open Wide: A Call to Linger in the Savior’s Presence, author Sherri Gragg offers a unique way to look at some of the most popular biblical stories from Scripture. Her approach is through the eyes of the people in the stories. What I found interesting was the emphasis on the cultural significance of the events. By understanding some of the background or practices followed at the time, the details became clearer and things that I often wondered about started to make sense.
The book is set up as a 34 day devotional study. Each day begins with a brief introduction and includes a glossary of terms that might be helpful with your understanding.
Each of the 34 devotionals are based on Old Testament scriptures. You read the scriptural account and then the devotional or study portion. Each day is a complete study and ranges about five pages in length. I found them detailed enough to offer a great overview of the scriptural teaching, and yet concise enough to be completed within my study time.
There is a prayer offered to close the study time. I felt these prayers could have been written by me at various times and the most readers would be able to relate personally with them.
Overall I liked the book as a study guide. However, I really enjoyed learning the cultural practices of them time and the significant of them. From a devotional viewpoint, this is geared towards touching the heart of a reader seeking knowledge and comfort in their faith. I would be comfortable using this in a small group or private ladies class.
Book Description
Come near. Stop striving. The Master of the banquet has raised His glass to welcome you as His dear child.
So often Christians view Christ as someone who’s far away and can’t be approached until they have their lives in order. In Arms Open Wide, author Sherri Gragg proves that Christ is a kinder, more tender, more loving Savior than many understand Him to be.
Sherri writes in fictional narrative form while mixing biblical history with scripture, creating a setting that transforms readers back in time and places them right in Jesus’ presence. For thirty-five days readers walk with the Savior to witness miraculous healings and events, and give fresh insight into His power by thinking and feeling with people whose lives became instantly transformed by His love and grace. Readers journey with Jesus and His disciples in the most important time in history.
Hearts will be stirred and lives will be changed as readers draw near and walk with the Savior as never before.
