We recently received this book from the HUGO, the Happy Starfish series. This has to be one of the most adorable, books for children about happiness. It addresses that happiness comes from within and that from giving to others with no anticipation on what you might get back. It also teaches Empathy, which is hard to children to learn but so important.
Hugo is a little starfish. He feels that life is dull. Tired of feeling sad, one day he sets off to find happiness. After much searching, he discovers that sharing with others is the only thing that makes him truly happy. Other things can make him feel good, but only for a little while.
Understanding that our happiness is a decision is hard to learn. Learning that by having a positive attitude leads to happy, content, self-confident and success. Suzy Liebermann has addressed this in this series of so charming books about HUGO THE HAPPY STARFISH.
I really appreciate that the books focus on character education and tries to help children learn to understand their feelings, their attitude, their choices and the consequences that follow. Through the simple story line, it opens the door for parents to talk to their children about their feelings. It is a real bonus that this book series also includes an introduction to the Spanish language. My little one has picked up a couple of words and loves to use them in the middle of the rest of his sentences. Too cute!
