College Students Saving Money
So you want to save money while you’re going to college? Good for you! A lot of decisions you make now in your life can and will impact your future, especially where your finances are concerned! Here are a few tips from someone who’s been in your shoes, along with an announcement about a wonderful giveaway you can enter below!
Food:
• Never shop for food when you’re already hungry. Not only can you make poor choices, but you may buy more than you would if you had planned ahead. Also use coupons when you can and talk about pot lucks or meal sharing with other students just like you!
• Cut back on the number of meals you go out for; fast food, takeout, and delivery charges add up quick! Find out which local restaurants offer a student discount or for cash purchases if you decide to go out (within your budget of course).
• Check out if your school offers a meal plan in their dining hall and only order the one that offers you what you would truly be interested in. Depending on your dorm/apartment cooking facilities, you may be happier to fix breakfast and lunch at home, and only worry about a dinner plan to save time and money.
Living Expenses:
• Find roommates to share the cost of rent and utilities! This should be done wisely and with planning…after all, you may be unhappy with a music student practicing all night when midterms and finals are coming up.
• Limit luxuries like cable, gym memberships, and cell phones wherever you can. Keep in mind you can get a lot of local channels for free with your digital antennae or online. Also, your school may offer a gym on site for free or at a major discount for current students. Consider going to a prepaid cell phone and use your texting or video conference software to keep up with your friends back home.
Textbooks:
• Whenever possible, !! Chances are you won’t be using it except for that one class and then you’ll be lucky to get a few lousy bucks back when you sell it after the semester. Check out places like Skyo where you can save up to 95% more than on and off campus bookstores. They offer textbooks on virtually every topic. Plus they have free shipping both to and from your address!
• If you absolutely need to keep a copy of your textbook, buy used! Skyo has along with a free shipping policy, plus you get the same book the bookstores sell, but without the plastic shrink-wrap. Think of this as starting your own future home library!
All in all, if you make smart choices about spending your money wisely, you will have more of it when school is over, or at least, you won’t owe nearly as much to credit card or student loan companies.

Another textbook tip is to speak with your professor. Many of us (20 years teaching college) will have extras to give to students in need. And if not an extra, we will put the book on reserve at the library. This means the textbook can be made available for free. Ask if it is on reserve.
