Confidence in the Lord
Psalm 64:10 “Let the righteous rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in him; let all the upright in heart praise him!” (NIV)
One great confidence we have in living the Christian life in this world is that God will surprise us with his awesome sense of timing. God knows us, and he understands our limitations as well as our strengths. In Jeremiah 29:11-13, God speaks some key words that all of us in Christ must remember in considering His great favor: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
God only wants what is best for us, and that means he wants us pointed in the direction of a Christ centered life. Our God often is willing to intervene in our lives to stimulate and encourage us to greater faith, dependence and humility, and confidence in the power of God. I love the story of Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, who happened to show up in Moses’s life just at the right time to teach him the importance of delegation so as not to wear himself out in the Lord’s work (Exodus 18: 17-23). Not for a moment do I accept that Jethro accidentally showed up at the tent of Moses! I believe that God intervened in the life of Moses and the people to show a better way for both Moses and the Israelites.
Do you believe that God will “shoot arrows” into the hearts of your fears and the harm others would do you (Psalm 64:7)? David lived on the edge with his back against the wall, and the great blessing of his life that he leaned on was the providential intervention of God in his life. In our devotional text, David expresses the joy in the confidence of God’s intervention when he says that because of God’s action we are to rejoice, seek refuge, and praise Him! Christians are confident in God’s power to act in this world on behalf of his own, and Psalm 64 teaches us that this is not a sometimes thing, but is to be counted on absolutely in our faith. How bold should we be in this world, knowing that we can do all things through him who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13)?
THANK YOU, LORD, FOR YOUR GRACIOUS INTERVENTION IN MY LIFE TO MAKE A WAY FOR ME. LORD, YOU ARE MY CONFIDENCE AND JOY, AND I WILL SEEK THE SECURITY OF YOUR REFUGE AS I PRAISE YOUR NAME FOR MY DELIVERANCE AMEN!
