Diercon Personal Water Filter & Mini Purifier Straw
Diercon did a great job with this personal water filter. This was one of the last items on my list for my getaway bag. Now that I have one, I can see that it would be great to have around for even short day trips such as a hike or other short trip where you could find yourself running out of water.
The unit two filtering chambers. The bottom is antibacterial activated carbon and the top contains a hollow fiber UF membrane. Based on their literature, the filter is expected to remove 99.9% of waterborne bacteria. And while I didn’t run to the creek out back and suck up the nasty drain water to test this, I did try it on both tap water and on filtered water. The tap water did taste better. I did not notice as much of a difference on the already filtered water. Even so, I would give this a thumbs up!
The product is simple to use since it’s really just a straw with amazing filtering capabilities. It does take a couple of strong pulls on the straw before the water works through the filters but once it’s flowing it is easy to keep it going. I was impressed when I read that this unit was rated for 400 gallons a year. This would be more than enough to make it through an emergency especially if we had one for each person in our family.
There are other accessories that take this product to a higher level including the two foot plastic tube, a collapsible water pouch, a sediment filter, and a syringe for washing the straw. If you make the investment in the basic water filter, consider the accessories as they would be a real help to have in an emergency.
Of course no one likes to think about ever needing a product like this. However, our area had back to back tornadoes come ripping through the area one afternoon a couple of years ago. And while water was available within hours from the surrounding undamaged neighborhoods the fact that it could have been a lot worse sent me preparing my family getaway bags.
You can purchase the Diercon Personal Water Filter and accessories on Amazon. At this price point, I plan on having one for each person in our family plus a couple more as backups.
