Fear and Faith {Book Review}
We’ve all been afraid. I think all of us had felt our heart jump in our throat or squeezed our eyes shut, just knowing something awful was coming our way. We’ve also all felt long term fear, in forms of anxiety, bad dreams, poor health, etc. But it doesn’t have to be that way. In her new book, Fear and Faith, Trillia Newbell helps us overcome our fear by relying on the Lord and His strength.
Are you ever afraid? Growing up, our greatest fears might have been the boogeyman hiding in the closet or the monster that lurked under the bed. As adults, though, our fears morph from childhood silliness into things that keep us up at night: worrying about an unknown future, replaying in our mind what others think of us, or plotting how we can keep up the superwoman act as we envision another day battling the to-do list.
“Fear is an emotion we can feel in a variety of ways; it can be paralyzing, controlling, and even motivating,” says Trillia Newbell, author of the new book, Fear and Faith (Moody Publishers, April 2015). “Unfortunately, fear is often a by-product of the sin in our heart. Fear has a way of whispering lies to our souls about who God is. We are given to fear, and we desire control, but the Lord has something better for us. The Lord has the better way—a way that will give us life and peace.”
Endorsed by numerous Christian leaders, including Matt Chandler, Nancy Leigh DeMoss, Randy Alcorn, Russell D. Moore, and Jon Bloom, among others, Fear and Faith explores fears women often experience, such as fear of man, fear of the future, fear of other women, fear of tragedy, the fear of not measuring up, fear of physical appearance, and the fear of sexual intimacy. Newbell takes women to the Bible, showing them the true issues at the root of the particular fear, and shares how they can learn to trust and lean on the Lord to find the peace they crave. She also includes several stories from other women to help readers see that they’re not alone and encourage them that there is hope.
I love how the author doesn’t preach at the reader, she uses personal examples and stories to guide us in the right direction. Whether you’re new to your personal relationship with Jesus or you’ve been His for a long time, fear can creep in our lives at any time.
How better to deal with it than with someone who’s been there? Who can hold our hand, show us the passages of Scripture that show us God’s promises, and remind us that Jesus is here with us, waiting to take our burdens and answer us in prayer.
By reading about other’s struggles, we can apply them to our own. By having Scripture to read over, memorize or take to heart, and to pray about, we will find comfort and truth in them. I enjoyed having her words, her stories about other women just like me, comfort me. And guide me to God’s promises and offer to take away my fears if I can just let go and trust in Him alone.
