Finding the Perfect Earbud
You’re on the treadmill; you’re just finding your groove and picking up speed when—plop—your earbuds fall out of place. You’re no longer running to the energetic sounds of the 80s. Instead, you’re hopping off the treadmill and shoving your ear buds in—extra tight so they don’t fall out again. But it’s useless—the sweat dripping down your head is causing the earbuds to slip right out. What you need is sweat-proof earbuds.
Truly sweat-proof earbuds will ensure that the earbud doesn’t slip out during your extra-hard workout, or even during your white-water rafting trip.
Sweat and waterproof is a good place to start, but there are some other qualities you should look for when buying your next pair of workout earbuds. Consider the following list to make your earbud experience the best possible:
- Comfortable—Have you ever experienced those hard, plastic earbuds? It’s like putting a piece of plastic in your ears—because you are! When choosing your next set of earbuds, look for ones that have a soft, silicone covering.
- Durable—If you’re going to invest more than $50 in a pair of earbuds, you want to make sure that they’re going to last. Look for earbuds that are rugged enough to handle your sweatiest workout or your most challenging endurance race.
- Non-tangling—Almost as annoying as earbuds constantly falling out is earbud cords getting all tangled and twisted around themselves. Look for cloth-covered cords that won’t tangle or tear.
- Rich sounding—Of course the most important feature of earbuds is amazing sound! And when it comes to earbuds and sound quality, all are certainly not equal. When reading up on earbuds, make sure that they’ve done more than just boost the bass. High-quality earbuds will employ innovative sound technology.
Research has shown that listening to music while working out can inspire you to work out longer and harder. Having sweat-proof earbuds that won’t slip out of your ears, that are comfortable, that will last, that won’t get tangled or torn, and that offer fantastic sound is worth the investment.

This is SO true! I have had so much trouble finding the right earbuds that don’t just pop out on a moment’s notice. It really messes up your stride whether you’re running or walking.

I wonder if these would work for me. I had a skin graft where they took the needed skin from behind my ear. I was a baby, so that was the best place. So now nothing will stay in my right ear and it drives me nuts.
