Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me {Review}

I grew up in the South and that meant listening to both Country and Gospel music being played on the AM radio on my granma’s kitchen table. And as in most homes in the South, Glen Campbell was a household name. His voice could be heard on the radio, on the television and even at the movies.
Several years ago, I remember Glen Campbell was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease but I had not kept up with him in recent years. Recently I was offered the opportunity to preview a new documentary on his life and how he and his family handled his diagnosis.
Oh, please take the time to watch this when you have the opportunity. I laughed, I cried and I smiled until my cheeks hurt. The touching stories shared by his family and friends will make you want to hug everyone around you.
Personally, I haven’t had to live through Alzheimer’s disease with a loved one. This movie opened my eyes and heart to those that are living it every day and just how precious those lucid moments must be to everyone in the family.
A couple of the statements from the movie really touched my heart.
Larry Gatlin was interviewed following one of the last concerts in the movie:
That wasn’t exactly the Glen Campbell we had known, but he still was. Ok, so he wanted to sing Wichita Lineman twice, who gives a rat. He went out there and played his heart out..and the crowd loved him!
Another quote was that:
The audience being there somehow triggers his ability to access that other part of his brain which is incredible.
And then Glen summed it up in his own words… I can still jump as high..I just can’t stay up as long!
Oh don’t we all feel that way as we age!
Here is a little information on the movie:
In 2011, when Glen Campbell was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, he joined forces with his family to fight the biggest battle of his life. Glen and his wife, Kim, made history by going public with the diagnosis – the first time a major American celebrity would share this experience with the world. The Campbell family then embarked on a short “Goodbye Tour,” but the three-week engagement turned into an emotional and triumphant 151-show nationwide tour de force.
This epic human drama about the undying bond between Glen and Kim, and their unwavering caring for each other, chronicles a story of love, resilience and the power of song.
GLEN CAMPBELL…I’LL BE ME is the true tale of how America’s greatest country star would not give up his music or his family, against all odds.
The film features those who know and love Glen, including Bruce Springsteen, Bill Clinton, The Edge, Paul McCartney, Jay Leno, Vince Gill, Jimmy Webb, Blake Shelton, Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Steve Martin, Chad Smith and Taylor Swift among many others. Rare vintage footage and extraordinary new performances of Glen’s most beloved hits immerse this moving cinematic account in the overwhelming talent of this humble family man. With joy and a tireless sense of humor, Glen and his family live each moment in the present while preparing for the future, all while playing their music to sold out venues on a star spangled voyage spanning the country from Carnegie Hall to the Hollywood Bowl.
