Halloween is almost here (not to mention the other holidays that soon follow) which means it's a season of delicious temptation. Sugary sweets, chocolates, caramels and more are everywhere we turn, including a number we our kids collect on purpose. So what are we to do? Here are a few suggestions to enjoy healthy treats with no tricks.

Stay Active

Even though the weather is changing, our activity level needs to keep going strong! This may mean finding other ways to exercise, such as walking on a treadmill or find an indoor track. A lot of local malls even allow walking clubs to come in before the stores open. It may also mean finding a local gym or indoor pool to swim laps over the colder months.

Sleep Habits

Most adults do not get enough sleep in today's busy world. Even I am guilty of being in bed but using my smartphone for work or to play games, or lay in bed with my laptop. Sleep is required in order to keep our bodies running smoothly. Keep your bedroom tidy, cool and dark; all of these will lend to a better night's sleep. And don't forget how wonderful a good nap feels in the afternoon! LOL

Just because we're trying to eat and feel better during the busy holiday season, full of delicious meals with friends and family, doesn't mean we have to give up snacks and sweets altogether. With just a few smart choices between two snacks or drinks, we can make our effort to stay healthy that much more of a success! Here are a few tips:

  • Eyeing the trick or treat candy bucket? Grab a handful of sweetened banana chips or some dried pineapple. It will satisfy your craving without spiking your sugar levels.
  • Looking for a sweet and creamy treat? Instead of ice cream, whip up a chocolate shake with some chocolate protein. Add your favorite kind of milk and a few ice cubes!
  • Mid-afternoon snack a weak point for you too? Scoop up some pumpkin seeds to get you through. Toss them with a little red pepper for a kick of heat.
  • Try a warm cup of peppermint tea to settle your stomach or relieve a headache after a long day instead of taking another chalky tasting tablet.
