Honor Redeemed by Christine Johnson
What’s a young, unmarried woman in the 1800’s to do when her parents die and her fiance is 1700 miles away? Why, spend her last dime to make the dangerous voyage to be with him, of course! At least, that’s the plan in the 2nd installment of the Keys of Promise series, Honor Redeemed, by Christine Johnson.
Two Men Vie for Her Affection–Survival Will Depend on Choosing the Right One
Two years ago, Prosperity Jones waved farewell to her beloved David as the army sent him to faraway Key West. Now with her parents gone, she has but one prospect for the future: make the dangerous journey from Nantucket to Key West to reunite with David and secure a happier life. Arriving penniless in the South, Prosperity is dismayed to find David married to someone else. Scrambling to survive and nursing a broken heart, she gains the friendship–and the affection–of a kind doctor. Could he be the answer to her loneliness? Or will her life be upended by circumstance yet again?
With a deft hand, Christine Johnson fills the reader’s senses with the sights, sounds, and smells of Key West in this heartwarming story of honor lost, honor redeemed, and a love forged in adversity.
Love stories never seem easy, and as an avid reader, I can honestly say I wouldn’t want to read an easy and smooth love story! But I enjoyed the tale set in the 1850’s, mainly in Key West. We get a glimpse into life back then and the medical field at the time, as the main character must find work when her plan doesn’t work out.
It’s not a spoiler to tell you that when she arrives, she finds her love already married and not pining for her, as she was for him! But the story doesn’t end there, and she can’t very well return home with no family and no money. So she makes the best of it.
I enjoyed becoming immersed in history as well as learning about the different characters in the book. Friendships and enemies, jealousy and trust, we get to experience it all as we follow along on the journey of love, faith, and the inner workings of the human heart.
