Mary Lambert – Heart On My Sleeve {Review}
Have you ever listened to a song that had a super neat beat and then you actually listened to the words? This week we received a copy of the latest album by Mary Lambert, Heart On My Sleeve to review and share our opinion on through the One2One Blogger Program.
This is a tough review for me on a personal level. While I listened to the entire album, I was touched by the “theme” of being true to yourself; not letting others put you down or hurt you. And while my older girls may decide to listen to the CD, I would not feel the same if my 5 year old was singing along.
Double Standard? I don’t know..there are many things that my older crew can and do participate in that the younger ones do not. Of course this CD may not be marketed to preteens, but if it is on the radio they will hear it.
Personal opinion aside, the latest CD does bring out points that I have had to deal with myself. Things like being abused or treated wrongly by someone in authority. Standing up for yourself and owning your mistakes, shortcomings and failures. My issues with the recordings are based on a difference in foundational beliefs. As far as the talent, Mary Lambert has a beautiful voice. She is a beautiful woman. She is also sharing a point of view that differs from mine.
So as far as a technical review, this is an encouraging production geared at helping young people step up and step out.
“Secrets,” which is to encourage vulnerability. Set to a buoyant pop melody and hand-claps, Lambert sings: “They tell us from the time we're young / To hide the things we don't like about ourselves / Inside ourselves / I'm not the only one / Who spent so long attempting to be someone else / Well I’m over it / I don't care if the world knows what my secrets are.”
Good point. Good advice.
In a recent interview with Mary, she shares her thoughts on her latest album, Heart On My Sleeve:
“Having an actual platform made me think about my motivations and what I want to put out into the world, So I made a list of goals.”
They were to:
Have fun
Create something catchy
Create something that positively impacts the world
Stay true to yourself
Make money
She achieved all of the above in this album.
From the parental and personal position, I would have a hard time allowing my younger children to listen to this album.
