Move On {Review}
Remember in the Bible, after eating the forbidden fruit, Adam and Eve wore fig leaves to hide their nakedness? In today’s world, don’t we Christians do the same thing? We hide our messes from God, our friends and family, even ourselves. That’s why I think this book, Move On: When Mercy Meets Your Mess, by Vicki Courtney, is a great resource for those of us that seem to be drowning in our “messes”.
You can say good-bye to the person you’ve been pretending to be!
Life is often messy. God makes provision to help us move beyond our messes.
Oftentimes our first instincts are to hide, deny, ignore, or run. In Move On best-selling author Vicki Courtney helps readers come clean with their muddy messes, revealing the deeper issues they must face, including:
- the need for approval
- struggles and broken dreams
- shame
- legalism
- idols
- Christian snobbery
It is in the middle of our messes, Vicki says, that Mercy shows up and offers us a safe place to process our struggles, imperfections, doubts, and fears. Once we face our messes, God, with his sweet mercy, can help us to get real, deal, and truly move on. Then with Mercy by our side, we are able to break free and experience the grace and freedom God intends.
Our messy life is usually of our own doing, a result of our actions or even our inactions. And while we may be able to hide it, or shuffle things around to keep it hidden from our friends and family, even ourselves, can we ever really hide it from God?
No.
So don’t you ever get tired of all this hiding? I find it exhausting, honestly. What a relief it is and will continue to be, to bring it in all it’s ugly, sloppy and shameful “glory” and lay it down for God. It’s like you’re saying “Here it is, Lord…I can’t hide it, I never could, and I can’t find my way out without Your guidance and grace.”
And you know what? He will help us. He will help clean it up, in His own time and way of course, but there’s no doubt after reading this book, that He’s just waiting for us to humble ourselves and ask.
I love the scripture references, the thought provoking questions and the personal stories that the author uses through this whole book. I felt like I was sitting at the table, having a conversation with a friend, as she told me about her struggles in order to help me with mine.
Ultimately, I think any of us would benefit from this book, even if we aren’t dealing with anything major at this moment. Plus, it would be great to share in a small group setting! That way folks could help with other’s struggles and emotions, while also keeping each other accountable in a loving way.
