My Soul Clings to Thee
Psalm 63:6-8 “On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.” (NIV)
There are times that relationships can become stressed and strained for many reasons. But in Psalm 63 we find David on the run again, but this time it is from Absalom, his beloved son, who has rebelled against his father and raised an army to usurp the throne. What is most tragic is that Absalom didn’t understand with spiritual discernment the nature of the kingdom and nation, ensuring that his rebellion would be brief and disastrous, ultimately resulting in Absalom’s death. Throughout this ordeal, David suffered as any parent would, but he had the added suffering of knowing that he had put God’s people in peril because of his sin and negligence toward his family.
But here David is in the desert of Judah alone, afraid, and tired. Many would be defeated if all we had was our own wits and strength, but not David. David’s secret was found in his relationship with his God, and it was the overwhelming nature of his character to seek God in the hard places of his life. As we have worked our way through Psalms, the most important lesson we have learned is to seek God’s help at all times, in all circumstances, for all things, for his help is and will always be sufficient to meet every need! If you desire to know David’s passion for intimacy with his God, read Psalm 63:1, for it is a reminder of how close David wanted to be with God.
In our devotional verses David exposes three daily practices for those of us who desire to know God fully.
- When we lay our head on the pillow, reflect on God’s presence in your life. If you have trouble sleeping, do as David did, and think on God through the watches of the night. (Psalm 63:6)
- Keep a confident spirit and optimistic attitude, because God is your ever present help in trouble. Be filled with spontaneous praise, which is ready to erupt at the hard places of life. Remember Paul and Barnabas that night in the jail at Philippi, in Acts 16. (Psalm 63:7)
- Cling to the Lord and hold on to never let go, because you know that no matter what hill you must climb or giant you must face, that God is sufficient in all things and his sure right arm will uphold you. (Psalm 63:8)
LORD, BUILD MY CONFIDENCE IN YOUR POWERFUL PRESENCE AS I WALK BY FAITH AND NOT BY SIGHT. I WILL CLING TO YOU ALWAYS TO BRING GLORY TO YOUR NAME.
