National Doughnut Day

June 7, 2013 SimplySherryl 4 Comments

National Doughnut Day
Did you know that today was National Doughnut Day? Note to self…make sure vacation to Florida takes place the first week of June! We don't have our favorite doughnut place in Kentucky!

Each year, on the first Friday in June you can celebrate with a free doughnut from most of the major chains.

Just a little bit of history….This annual event dates back to 1938 when the Salvation Army organised a fundraising campaign to help the needy in Chicago and honour women that served doughnuts to soldiers during the First World War. Cool huh?

That tradition continued during the Second World War when female Red Cross volunteers distributed doughnuts to soldiers, eventually being referred to as “Doughnut Dollies”.

Today, Americans love their doughnuts, and this love is spreading worldwide at a rapid pace. Indeed, the industry employs approximately 141,000 people and generates a whopping $12 billion each year.

Dunkin Donuts has grown to become the main player in the US doughnut market, competing with Krispy Kreme and Starbucks, among others. Every year, an estimated 2.3 billion doughnuts are sold at Dunkin Donuts’ 10,000 outlets across the world to five million customers. Americans alone drink 1.5 billion cups of Dunkin coffee annually – that’s enough to fill 22 football stadiums!

National Doughnut Day is becoming increasingly popular in the United States and around the rest of the world.

We visited Krispy Kreme because they are our favorite and they are no longer available in Kentucky.National Doughnut Day

I was so hoping to get out and get a free doughnut today, but it is pouring here in NJ and the allure of one free doughnut just isn’t enough to motivate me to go out in the rain, lol

Thank you for sharing! : )

LOL I understand that! We are on vacation in Florida and had a day of shopping planned so we are out anyway. There is a tropical storm blowing through and the rain is coming down!

Of course there would be a National Doughnut Day! We have days for almost everything now! I think it’s a little silly but whatever. I do love doughnuts though..Glaze are always my favorite but I love chocolate ones too. Very interesting all the facts you know about doughnuts!
