No Cape Required {Review}
No Cape Required, 52 Ways to Unleash Your Inner Hero, is a great devotional from Kristen Parrish. It takes 52 heroes from TV, film, comics and novels and uses each one to teach a Christian characteristic that each one demonstrates in their own way.
Each “chapter” lists the character’s name, what piece of work they are found in, a verse of applicable Scripture, why they are a hero, and then a prayer and call to action.
I found a few favorites that I wouldn’t have considered as a hero until I looked at it from the author’s point of view. For example, Alfred Pennyworth, Batman’s loyal man servant. His chapter points out while he wasn’t out fighting crime and saving citizens, he was taking care of things at home that Batman clearly trusted him with. His characteristic is “Quiet Service”; that while people may look down on the Alfred’s of the world, Jesus speaks of service often. This world wouldn’t be the same without the Alfred Pennyworth’s doing their services quietly.
I personally enjoyed the take action sections after each characteristic. It would list a few ideas or tasks to be completed, such as identify someone in your life who meets that ideal or how you can be an example of the character trait yourself.
I found this book to be an easy read; the only reason it took me more than a day or two to read was the action points. Some of them took some time to think through or write down.
Here is the information from the publisher:
What do Katniss Everdeen, Spider-Man, and Huckleberry Finn have in common? They’re heroes—and you can be just like them.
As children, we dream of throwing on a cape and changing the world. Then we grow up, we learn to see the flaws in our movie stars and athletes, and we accept that true heroism is not possible in the real world. You continue to dream, though. Isn’t that why you still love watching heroes on the big screen? It’s more than just wish fulfillment. You resonate with Superman’s justice and Dorothy’s courage because you have those same qualities within yourself.
In these pages, Kristen Parrish looks at the qualities of fifty-two heroes, and then shows how you can acquire every one of those qualities. No gamma rays or radioactive spider bites are needed. You can unleash your inner hero through prayer and practical action.
Men and women, boys and girls alike, will find role models within these pages. While others watch and dream on the sidelines, you can step out in faith, learning from heroic examples and praying for God’s help to make you who you were meant to be.
The Holy Spirit enables us to do great things. Find out how. No cape required.
This book is available on Amazon in paperback and kindle formats.

What an inspirational book! Thank you for the review.
I love devotionals, this one is very unique. I would love to share this with my adult son, who is still very indulged in comics, and even writes his own. This might really appeal to him, I’d really like to see him back in the Word on any level at this point.
