Outdoor Holiday Decorating

Outdoor Holiday Decorating

My family has always enjoyed checking out holiday decorations during the fall and winter. You can tell who puts a lot of effort into decorating and who doesn't, like me. My porch only gets decorated when one of the adult children come over and set it up; I just don't have the time until it's too late. But this year, I started working on a collection of foundation pieces from my local At Home store, perfect for outdoor holiday decorating!

Outdoor Holiday Decorating

So how do you decorate your porch and entryway for the holidays, without buying a ton of new and expensive items that are only good for one specific holiday?

Outdoor Holiday Decorating

Well, I like to think of it as building your wardrobe when you're entering the work force.

  1. Start with a few solid foundation pieces. These would include furniture pieces such as tables, benches, artificial plants, etc. For my outdoor holiday decorating, I used a few pieces I already owned and added a colorful table with a mirrored top and a tall, sparkling tree. None of these items “scream” one holiday/season or another, so they work year round!
  2. Add pops of color to start to narrow down on your holiday or season. This means adding a wreath to your door, using weather proof cushions of dark fall colors or a rug with a winter theme message on it. These are usually smaller pieces and set out for an entire season, not just a single holiday or event.
  3. To add that specific holiday flair, round out your outdoor holiday decorating with small things like candles, lights, garland and other baubles that are easy to set out and then pack away for next year. This way you can use the majority of your decorating budget on the larger, year round pieces while being able to pick up your favorite holiday items to finish the look!

Of course, I shop at my local At Home store year round, picking up pieces for summer grilling, spring decorating, and even gifts for a hostess or house warming party! I personally enjoy that I have plenty of choices, no matter the theme or budget.

Outdoor Holiday Decorating

And now, I've figured out how to start decorating my front porch and doorway for each season so it won't be so daunting or time consuming.

Outdoor Holiday Decorating

Here's what I have ready for both the fall and winter holidays. After a good cleaning of the porch and door, I rearranged the larger furniture (a bench and a glider) into a more relaxing setting so friends and family can gather and talk. I positioned the new table into the center to hold coffee mugs or small plates and decorated the top with a candle holder plus some fall harvest pieces. Then I added a few fall themed pillows for comfort, a new doormat, and a wreath for the door!

Outdoor Holiday Decorating

After the Thanksgiving holiday is over, I will swap out the pillows for more festive, red & green ones, as well as the candles. I also have small LED lights to add to my glittering tree as well as the table top.

Outdoor Holiday Decorating

Plus, I will change out the wreath and doormat for more winter appropriate ones!

Outdoor Holiday Decorating

I didn't have to spend a fortune, and a number of the pieces are fine to sit out all year long! Less work for me and it saves money for the budget. You can't beat that.

Outdoor Holiday Decorating

Whether you want to start decorating your front porch and doorway like I did, refresh your mantle, or even get your guest room ready for the holidays, you can find all the seasonal items you need at your local At Home store.

I love ❤️ decorating outdoors! I have carried on the tradition from my mother. We live in the city so our outdoors is traditional lighting of the city lights! Thanks for the article!

I enjoy finding things at Big Lots and Michaels act for decorating outside!
Sometimes I can’t get a picture in my head of what I want it to look like.
I’ll work on that! Thanks for the great post!

I try to decorate the outside of my house every holiday to some extent. Christmas and Halloween are the 2 I go all out.

These spaces look so inviting. I’m lucky if I remove the dirty catfood bowls from my porch before guest arrive, ha!
