Rasmus and the Vagabond {Book Review}
One of the joys of homeschooling is being able to pick literature for the kids to read for their education! Having grown up loving Pippi Longstocking, I love that the author, Astrid Lindgren, wrote Rasmus and the Vagabond, a story about an orphaned boy searching for a forever home, and all the adventure along his journey.
After running away from an orphanage, nine-year-old Rasmus finds the world a cold and unfriendly place until he befriends an extraordinary tramp called Paradise Oscar. Together they meet more adventure than they ever imagined, solve a mystery, and catch the culprits. Rasmus dreams of finding a family and a home someday. But when he does, will he be able to part with his new friend and life on the road?
Children will hang onto every word as Rasmus and his unlikely friend discover hidden treasure, dodge a shady pair of villains, and rescue a lady in distress. Here’s a gripping plot interweaving cops and robbers, a deserted village, a desperate chase, and a surprising, thoroughly satisfying ending.
This is one of those books that I don’t have to worry about bad words, adult situations, or having to explain something I’m not ready to explain to my kids. Set in a different time, before video games, constant news and TV shows, it boils down to a story about a young boy who runs away and meets a traveling companion, if you will, named Paradise Oscar.
The two of them have a marvelous adventure, filled with all sorts of “trouble”, interesting characters, and unique situations that all lead to Rasmus finding a family of his own. Does he cling to his friend, Oscar, and live life on the road, seeing how it’s exciting? Or does he settle down, knowing that he’s wanted his own family for as long as he can remember?
Well, you’ll have to read Rasmus and the Vagabond to find out, but you won’t be disappointed! This would also make a great book to read as a family, or at bed time, leading to interesting questions and topics to discuss with your own children.
You can purchase your copy of Rasmus and the Vagabond at Family Christian.
I also have the opportunity to give away a copy to one lucky reader! Good luck!
