The Warble

Book Review: The Warble

I just finished reading The Warble. It is a YA Fantasy book, but written more for middle-grade readers.  I do enjoy this genre. I often read selections in order to be able to discuss the reading material assigned to my children. We read this one together and enjoyed it a lot.

So if you are into dwarfs, fairies, gnomes, and an evil queen – this is the book for you! It contains all of these and more in this delightfully enchanting tale of adventure and friendship.

Summary:

Twelve-year-old Kristina Kingsly feels like the most unpopular girl in her school. The kids all tease her, and she never seems to fit in. But when Kristina receives an unusual Christmas gift, she suddenly finds herself magically transported to the land of Bernovem. Once there, Kristina not only fits in, she’s honored as “the chosen one” the only one who can release the land from Queen Sentiz’s control. But it’s not as simple as it seems. To save Bernovem, she must place the gift she was given, the famous “Magic Warble” in its final resting place. And she must travel through the deep forest, climb a treacherous mountain, and risk capture by the queen’s “zelbocks” before she reaches her destination. Guided by her new fairy friends, Clover and Looper and by Prince Werrien, a teenage boy, as well as an assortment of other characters, Kristina sets off on a perilous journey that not only tests her strength but her heart.

The book did not end as I expected. I was a little disappointed and left wanting a different ending; but maybe that was the author’s intent…leaving something to come back with in a sequel?

That being said, it's a great easy read. One that would be fun to read as a family.

Looks like a good book for YA Girls and without a predictible ending, I think the empathy would head towards wondering how to end it differently.

This sounds like a great book for my daughter! She is going to middle school in the Fall and she loves to read! She loves all types of books but she really likes magical books. I’ll have to get her a copy of this to read over the summer!

The plot sounds like Narnia and LOTR combined. I’ll recommend this to my younger brother so that I can find out more about the story.

I loved your review on The Magic Warble. It is just the kind of story my grandchildren would also love, especially my granddaughter. She is very big in the fantasy world and magical mysteries. Thanks for picking out our next story!

It’s great to find a parent who reads, perhaps I should say pre-reads, books. I often did that with my children and many of my friends were surprised. I agree with you about needing to read the books first. Unfortunately standards for what is appropriate for children have changed over the years. And not for the better. I also enjoyed being able to talk to my sons about the books they were reading. I was able to enjoy Brian Jaques’ Redwall books right along with my son. It was great.
