Sawmill Creek Resort {Review}
When we travel and plan to stay somewhere for more than just one night, I try to find a place that has several things to do on site, especially if my husband is with us. And Sawmill Creek Resort definitely fits that bill, since it has rooms and suites, conference and wedding areas, restaurants and an 18 hole golf course!
Arriving at Sawmill Creek Resort in Huron/Sandusky, Ohio, you immediately sense something special. Nestled on the shores of Lake Erie, The Lodge, 18-hole Tom Fazio Golf Course, Marina and Shops are set on 235 –acres of affordable luxury. The Lodge features 240 deluxe guest rooms and suites, creative cuisine at Salmon Run Restaurant with patio dining, casual fare in Trappers Deli, indoor and outdoor pools, game room and casual lobby sitting rooms with decor themed to reflect the North American Woodland Indian. Step out of the Lodge to experience the lakefront beach, tennis, and the Sawmill Creek Shops. Stroll down to the marina on Lake Erie or enjoy Sheldon Marsh Nature Preserve, representing some of the last remaining undeveloped stretches of shoreline in the Sandusky Bay region. After a round of golf or lesson with the Pro, enjoy a casual lunch or dinner at Mulligan’s Pub covered deck offering views of the pond on the 9th green. Head for the marina to the award winning Mariner’s Dockside Restaurant overlooking the Lake and the176-slip marina. The screened patio is a pleasant dining option on a warm summer evening.
Complimenting the Resort campus is a wide range of flexible meeting space with a highly trained staff to handle a multitude of decisions and details to assure a successful meeting, conference, convention, trade shows, teambuilding, executive retreats and family reunions at this premier Ohio Lake Erie destination. If wedding bells are in your future, Sawmill Creek Resort offers spectacular and unique settings on the lakefront for a truly memorable day.
I liked the fact that my family could stay here for an entire trip and not have to leave the property if we didn’t want to. There were several swimming pools and a hot tub on site, so the kids could swim as much as they wanted, whether inside or outside depending on the weather. Plus, we had several restaurants to choose from, depending on the time of day and how fancy we wanted to eat! There is also shopping on site at a place called the Sawmill Creek Shops which sell everything from fashion to jewelry, books and gourmet kitchen items.
Then there’s also the golfing, which the guys in my group would enjoy especially. While I don’t know much about golf, I did admire the beautiful course that actually bumps up against Lake Erie at one point. And it’s ok that we don’t live local; the guys can pay the daily fees, rent a cart, and even a set of clubs if they didn’t bring their own.
The room we stayed in was in their Executive building and it was nice. Our room had 2 double beds plus a sofa bed. There was a generous sized work desk which was nice when I needed to set up my laptop to work. Plus the bathroom was large enough for us to share with the younger kids as they rotated through baths and getting ready the next day. It was also very quiet, which I appreciated!
The Lodge itself, as well as the buildings, were decorated in Native American style, which included many pictures and objects of animals, nature and more. It definitely was not decorated as your traditional chain hotel. But they did offer traditional amenities such as the ice and soda machine, coffee makers, high speed internet and such.
While we were staying there, we did visit the Salmon Run Restaurant which was quiet, but beautiful. It looks out over a courtyard and small creek that runs through it and has plenty of windows to enjoy the view outside. It’s a little on the “upscale” side, especially for a family dinner, but they also offered the menu selections the Black Bear Saloon when we inquired about it. We ended up ordering off both menus anyway! My favorite thing was probably the baked brie dish which had a granola crusted outside, and included apples, grapes, flat bread and peach chutney for dipping and sharing. Even the kids ate it up.
One thing I wasn’t expecting was the distance to the beach. While the property is on the shore of Lake Erie, the Lodge is not. We ended up driving to the back of the property and parked nearby. The area closest to the gravel path is for residents of the private condos only. Then it’s almost a half mile through the woods to get to the shore. Now, it was definitely very nice once we got there. There were lounge chairs on the sand, plus several picnic tables and areas to play in. And as a mom, I appreciated the clean portable bathrooms as well! We found out too late that you can request a golf cart lift to the beach from the front desk staff LOL!
The Sawmill Creek Resort is definitely a nice place to visit and stay at, whether you’re in town for Cedar Point, want to golf, or want to host an event like a wedding or a conference. Be sure to also check out their specials and packages they offer for a good deal. Plus, follow them on Facebook for all the latest information.
