Scheduling Daily My Time
Do you use a planner for your daily activities? Do you find that you say yes to things too often and end up running all day without a break? Yeah? That was me for a long time.
But not any more…
Now I schedule time for myself right on my calendar. It started when I committed to having a daily quiet prayer and study time. I made an appointment on my Google calendar for the time slot. This way I would not be tempted to allow another activity or meeting get dropped in that time.
I also schedule breaks throughout the day. As a writer, I sit for hours and hours each day. To the point that my legs get cold and ankles swell. To counter this, I schedule an appointment with myself at 50 minutes past each hour during working hours. The reminder not only helps me to remember to get up and walk around, it is a way for me to wrap up any meeting that might be running long. (shh don’t tell my clients that)!
What are things that you could schedule in your appointment book?
How about that 3pm hour that just seems to drag on and on? Would a 10 min break to close your eyes and put up your feet or drink a glass of water give you the bump needed to get through the rest of the work day? Schedule it!
Like many moms, I can get caught up in getting things done after the little ones are in the bed and the house is quiet. You know what I mean, you look up and it is 3am and your alarm is set for 6am. Yikes! Now I schedule my backups to start at midnight on my computer and websites. With these running, it is almost impossible to work on anything online. I also have a reminder scheduled at 11:45pm about the backups starting so I can shut down anything I am working on and walk away from the desk.
Whether you use Google Calendar or a printed one, scheduling daily my time is important. It is important because when you run all the time and never stop to rest or recharge; you end up sick or burning out.
With the crazy schedule that most of us keep, I challenge you to schedule some my time into every day. Start small and build up to blocks of time that might allow for other interests if you are not requiring the time to rest. You would be surprised what you can get done in 15 minutes.
