Soul Feast, An Invitation to the Christian Spiritual Life {Book Review}
Marjorie Thompson’s book, Soul Feast takes a look the Spiritual Disciplines needed to grow in your faith. This version of her book is a revised edition of a title she brought out in 1995. According to the press release and notes this version has been added to but not changed on principles from the original version.
I did not read the original version so I personally cannot compare them but this version covers different Spiritual Disciplines that will help you as you develop your faith. Each point is written from the perspective of someone that has spent time learning and living them. I liked that presentation. The book was not a list of things I need to do to be a good Christian. Instead it shares ways to start in your walk, whether you are a new Christian or looking to develop a deeper knowledge of the scriptures in order to apply them to your daily life.
Topics include learning to Hunger for the Spirit, Learning to chew on the Word, Communicating with God in Prayer, Reclaiming Time for Worship, The Practice of Self-Emptying and Putting it all together just to name a few. Each of these points are shared in a way that a reader can easily understand and learn to apply in their daily walk.
From the book introduction:
What I have observed over the past twenty years has increased my sense of urgency about the need for spiritual practice among us. If we do not learn to honor and strengthen the inner life of spirit, all the external changes in the world cannot save us. New laws, regulations, and technological fixes are all susceptible to human corruption and self-interest. If we do not know ourselves as beings created to reflect the divine image, we will lose the immense opportunity for transformation God has offered us in the gift of life itself. And if the love of God embodied in Christ cannot turn us, how shall we be turned?
I would recommend this book as a study guide to be used along with your Bible. The basic steps would not conflict one way or another with any faith.
