Do you enjoy stories about the military? Submarines? Hostages? Lost love?
No? How about previously undiscovered oil reserves under Antarctica? Yeah, I knew I’d catch your attention with one of those! Let me tell you about a book I got to read from Don Brown called Storming the Black Ice.
When British geologists discover the world’s largest oil reserves under the desolate, icy tundra of Antarctica, Britain and Chile form a top-secret alliance for control of petroleum resources that will rival the economic power of OPEC.
But when their discovery is uncovered by an Argentinean intelligence officer, a surprise-attack against a secret British outpost in Antarctica triggers a war. Britain and Chile are in a military standoff against Venezuela and Argentina, and when the war escalates, Britain asks America for help.
This is a tale about scientists who find oil and work out a deal to keep it secret, at least long enough until they can have it on lock down before telling the world about it…and possibly setting off another world war. But, as most secrets don’t end well, that’s also the case in this book. It blows up into several nations trying to get a piece of the action in exchange for military help. I liked the fact we get to “see” into the thoughts of several characters, both good guys and bad ones. I also appreciated the lack of cursing that I’m sure is prevalent in these high stress and dangerous situations described in the book.
Mixed in with the warfare, submarines, and politics, are a few “romantic” story lines for several of the characters. Don’t worry, since this is a Christian book, there’s nothing dirty or embarrassing. It was enough to keep my girly attention with the war going on around the characters.
Now, this is the third installment of his Pacific Rim series, but I didn’t feel I was missing a lot because I hadn’t read the earlier books. But I will probably go check them out now to see what happened before this tale takes place.
All in all, I liked this book and would probably read his other works.
