Streams of Mercy {Book Review}
Most of you know by now that I love to read. It’s one of my favorite hobbies, when I can find the time between work, family, homeschool and church. So when I do find time to read, I want to read a story, usually a period piece (set in history) and get lost without the drama, violence and language in a lot of popular books. I’ve just finished Streams of Mercy by Lauraine Snelling.
Anji Baard Moen, a recent widow, returns from Norway with her children. She quickly settles back into life in Blessing, teaching Norwegian history in the high school and writing articles for the Blessing Gazette. When tragedy strikes, Anji steps in to run the newspaper and soon finds a kindred spirit in the widower who owns the printing press. As they spend time together, Anji wonders if there’s something more than friendship growing between them.
But Anji has also caught the eye of a recent arrival to Blessing. He has put his carpentry skills to good use on the town’s building projects, including Anji’s house. But Anji is torn between her feelings of loyalty to someone who needs her and the chance to build a new life with this intriguing newcomer.
Where will her choice take her?
This is the third book in the Song of Blessing series by the author, but I don’t think you have to have read the first two to enjoy this book. They take place in a town called Blessing, North Dakota, in the early 1900s. The main character, Anji, has just returned to the area after being in Norway with her children, having just lost her husband.
We get to watch her settle back in, take up a teaching job and a post at the newspaper, while the town deals with a crisis. I personally enjoyed seeing from the reader’s perspective how she slowly became torn between two very different men in her life; one from the past and one a stranger in town.
You also see various characters and plot lines from the first two books if you’ve already read them, and if you haven’t, you should go back and enjoy more of Blessing, North Dakota!
I like that there is some drama, romance, and friendships while still maintaining a focus on God. It manages to be a well rounded book and a quick read because you want to know what will happen next!
