Whenever we have family get togethers, especially during the fall, we tend to watch football. And I don’t just mean the guys, either. Several of my adult daughters & daughter-in-laws watch just as much as their husbands! But several of the females in our family don’t always seem to know what’s going on, so the book, The Modern Girls’ Guide to the Gridiron, makes a great gift!

Since its birth, football has been largely regarded as a man’s sport. But that’s all changed, and fortunately for the ladies, in addition to being womanly, cleavage-bearing, arm candy, we’re also tackling roles where we use every part of our brain, and project that knowledge without hesitation. As a sports journalist, I found that several of the biggest problems for some women regarding football, were breaking the language barrier, explaining the process, and dissecting the terms. It’s written by VF Castro, who grew up around football and saw the need for a women’s guide to football! It’s not just for wives or girlfriends either, but mothers who have sons playing the sport or daughters who want to learn more but tend to shy away from asking their Dad and brothers. 

No one likes to be given the “duh” look by someone when we ask what we think is an honest question. As with any other topic, once you have armed yourself with at least the basic knowledge, you’ll be able to enjoy the game, conversations, and even able to help out your fellow “newbies” to the great sport of football.

And the author covers everything in this book from the history of the sport, how players are noticed, the rules and more! I found it to be an easy and fun read, even with a good understanding of the game already.
