The Rock that is Higher than I

 

 

Psalm 61:1-2 “Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to a rock that is higher than I.” (NIV)

Let us always remember that no matter how weak we become or faint we grow that God can still commune with us. When people are lost in this world and radio signals grow faint or cell phones play out, it is inevitable that we lose contact with the outside world. Tragically, this contact may not be restored until many weeks or months have passed and often it is too late for those who were lost. I cannot think of anything worse in this life than to be lost with no idea or understanding as to how to retrieve myself from my lost condition. David understood this better than most men, for he was constantly on the run trying to elude King Saul and those who pursued him. Although David grew weak he was never lost, because David knew with absolute confidence that God would hear his prayer no matter where he was or what condition he was in.

When you view our devotional text, it is set in a psalm that many think portrays the time of Absalom’s rebellion against his father, King David. We can imagine the pain, discouragement, and tears that David experienced, but we must clearly see that this psalm portrays a constant habit of David’s life, which was his absolute dependence upon the help of God that David knew would be there when he lifted his voice in prayer. God knew David’s location, condition, and need, and God was faithful to David every single time to deliver him.

We all need a safe place, where there is a “rock that is higher than ourselves”; and that transformation to a place of security, stability, and safety is only possible if we humble ourselves and cry out to God for his help, that he may lead us to this higher ground. High ground is enormously advantageous to us all, for we can see above our own circumstances and gain perspective on what we face and where we are in life. Only God can take us to the higher ground, for only he has this transforming power.

Habakkuk prays in Habakkuk 3:19 “The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go to the heights.” In this world, people will be lost and have no means to communicate with the outside world, but for David and for all of us in Christ, we have access anywhere in the world to the transforming power of God, who will hear us and lead us to the higher ground.

FATHER, I CALL OUT TO YOU KNOWING THAT YOU WILL HEAR ME AND LEAD ME TO THE ROCK WHICH IS HIGHER THAN I. I THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOVE AND OMNIPOTENT POWER WHICH NEVER LET’S ME GO. AMEN!
