All My Fountains are in You
Psalm 36:9 “For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.” (NIV)
Have you ever been to Yellowstone Park and viewed the geyser known as “Old Faithful”? This geyser is called “Old Faithful” because it erupts every 35 to 120 minutes for 1½ to 5 minutes spewing steaming water into the air from 90 to 184 feet high. Tourists visit Yellowstone every year to experience this natural phenomenon and they are not disappointed, because Old Faithful is faithful to its natural rhythm of eruptions. How dismal would it be to show up at Yellowstone and Old Faithful fail to be faithful and not erupt? We don’t like undependability in our lives, whether it be geysers, businesses, or people who promise one thing but do the opposite, or, what is worse, do nothing at all. We all experience unfaithful people in our lives, and it hurts deeply when they let us down or even betray us.
In Psalm 36 David addresses the wicked person who is disrespectful to God, full of pride, practices deceitful speech, and purposely pursues wrong and harmful directions in his or her life. David compares and contrasts this weak willed, mean spirited, and extremely selfish person with the faithfulness of God, as highlighted by his love for his creation and especially all mankind. In fact, in Psalm 36:5 we are told that God’s love reaches to the heavens, and his faithfulness to the skies. I love this picture of God who is faithful or absolutely dependable in fulfilling all his promises! The absolute dependability of God to be there for us, no matter what, is an outcome of his character and his awesome presence as both the creator and sustainer of our universe.
Speaking of eruptions, I urge you to erupt in spontaneous praise whenever you think on the glory and the power of this loving God who touches every facet of your life on this earth. We have opportunity upon opportunity each day to erupt in a shout out of praise to our Lord for the good he accomplishes in our lives. When God demonstrates his faithfulness to you, then stop and take the time to praise his name and thank him for his love and faithfulness. Remember our devotional text that all fountains of life flow from him, and the waters of the goodness and energy of our lives come directly from this good and faithful God.
God also is our light to show us the way as he helps us to compare and contrast the evil in this world with his holiness, love, and light by giving us guidance on the way we should go. The light of his inspiration, creativity, and righteousness will guide you through the treacherous paths ahead, if you will honor him by your trust and obedience. When the hand of God reaches down and touches you, shout out praise for his blessed presence which overwhelms you with love, life, and light as you walk hand in hand with him.
FATHER, I PRAISE YOU, FOR ALL MY FOUNTAINS ARE IN YOU, AND YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF MY LIFE. HELP ME TO BE FAITHFUL TO YOUR HOLY CALLING. AMEN!
