Refining Fire {Book Review}
Reading has always been a joy for me. And not just one type of book either, but a variety of genres, topics and authors. I have my favorites of course, and an author on the list is Tracie Peterson. Her new series, Brides of Seattle, has just released the second book called, Refining Fire. And it’s another great book to add to your collection.
Twenty-two-year-old Militine Scott is in training at the Madison Bridal School in Seattle, yet she has no intention of pursuing marriage. What respectable man would have her? But she has found the school provides the perfect opportunity to keep her unsavory past hidden.
Thane Patton, though fun-loving and fiercely loyal to his friends, hides a dark secret, as well. He finds himself drawn to Militine, sensing that she harbors a haunting pain similar to his own.
Will they allow God to make something new and beautiful from the debris of their past?
I enjoyed this book for two main reasons.
The first is the historical details that the author includes. It’s set in the late 1800’s, when the harbor areas of Seattle are getting up and running. Not only do the readers learn about the Bridal School and the characters, but we also learn about the culture and customs of that time period. I also had to look up information about the Great Seattle Fire which is mentioned in the book as it had such a large impact on the area the story takes place.
And the second reason is the Christian romance & relationships through the book. We get to meet several characters along the way, but a few stick out like Militine and Thane, plus Abrianna and Wade. It can be tough to find a good love story that isn’t filled with graphic descriptions or bad language. But in Refining Fire, we can watch these characters work together (most of the time) while struggling with their faith and doing what God wants…not man.
I enjoyed watching the couples learn about faith, whether finding it or just learning to rely on it, as they come from less than ideal upbringings. Secrets, abusive pasts, and shame all come into play as they have to let go and trust God.
If you’re looking for a historical romance that still manages to keep it’s Christian viewpoint, then I’d suggest Refining Fire as a title to read.
